Franklin Medals are first awarded.

January 21, 1793

[1792-Brayley] The silver medals are the product of a 1792 bequest from Benjamin Franklin, in which he wrote, “I was born in Boston, New England, and owe my first instruction in literature to the free grammar school established there.” They are awarded annually to the best students in the Boston schools. Andrew Belknap and John Collins Warren are among the first recipients. Originally given to boys only, girls are awarded equivalent “City Medals” beginning in 1821.* Eventually, the medals are given only to the top male scholars at Boston Latin School and the English High School.
